Collection: Lobe | Gauge: 20g (0.8mm), 18g (1.0mm), 16g (1.2mm) | Recommended Length/Diameter: 6mm to 8mm labrets, 8mm to 10mm rings | Material: ASTM F136 Implant-Grade Titanium
The earlobe piercing goes through the soft, fleshy lower part of the ear and is the most common piercing in the UK by a wide margin. Because the lobe has no cartilage, it heals faster and tolerates more jewellery styles than any other ear placement. Flat-back labret studs are the most comfortable everyday choice, sitting flush against the back of the ear with nothing to catch on hair or pillows. Small hinged rings and seamless hoops suit stacked and second-lobe piercings. Even on a lobe, ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium is worth choosing over plated fashion earrings: it is nickel-free, hypoallergenic and will not turn skin green or itchy, which is the most common complaint with cheap lobe earrings.
What gauge is a standard earlobe piercing?
Most UK earlobe piercings are 20g (0.8mm) or 18g (1.0mm) when done with a needle, and a little smaller when done with a piercing gun. Some piercers use 16g (1.2mm) on request so the lobe can take heavier rings later. Jewellery must match the gauge of your piercing, so if you are unsure, a 20g or 18g labret is the safe assumption for a typical lobe piercing, and 16g for one that was pierced for stretching.
Earlobe Jewellery: The Fastest-Healing Ear Piercing in Implant-Grade Titanium
UK piercers typically pierce lobes at 20g (0.8mm) or 18g (1.0mm) with a needle, and at 16g (1.2mm) if you plan to wear heavier rings or stretch later. A fresh lobe is fitted with a 6mm to 8mm labret to allow for swelling, then downsized to a snugger 6mm once settled. Healing takes around 6 to 8 weeks, with the tissue fully mature at about 3 months. Common mistakes include sleeping on the new piercing, swapping to butterfly-back earrings that trap bacteria, and leaving jewellery out too long so the hole shrinks. Lobes pair naturally with cartilage piercings higher up the ear, so many people build a curated ear with helix studs, a tragus labret or a conch ring in matching titanium.
How long does an earlobe piercing take to heal?
An earlobe piercing usually heals in 6 to 8 weeks, making it the quickest ear piercing to settle. The tissue continues to strengthen for around 3 months, so keep cleaning with saline until then and avoid changing jewellery in the first 6 weeks. Second and third lobe piercings placed closer to the cartilage edge can take a few weeks longer because the tissue there is denser.
Should I wear a stud or a hoop in a new lobe piercing?
A flat-back labret stud is the better choice for a fresh lobe piercing. It does not move through the piercing channel, so it causes less irritation while the tissue heals, and the flat disc sits comfortably against the ear when you sleep. Hoops look great once healed, typically after 2 to 3 months, when the lobe can tolerate the slight movement of a ring without becoming sore.
Why do my earrings make my ears itch or go green?
Itching, redness or a green tinge on the skin almost always means the earrings contain nickel or a plating that is wearing through, which is common in fashion jewellery. ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium contains no nickel and does not corrode, so it removes the cause rather than masking it. If a lobe is already irritated, switch to titanium, clean with saline twice a day and see your piercer if swelling or discharge continues.
